What a lovely website! I'm still to digest it all but have read the history of the Steere family.
I came across this looking for mentions of Joshua Clarke, born 1795 in Alvethorpe. In the 1841 census he's a publican in Thorne, so I'm looking for pubs of the time and the area...
Joshua is not actually a relative of mine afaik though we have the same name, but he's a direct ancestor of my wife. Hard work having a common name like Clarke.
I'll keep looking!

Hi,
Im wondering if anyone can help. My late grandfather, William Benson was born in Thorne in 1929. The family were originally from Leigh, Lancashire and moved here in the 20s to the mid 30s.There were his parents, William and Catherine along with his 4 older sisters, May, Barbara-Ann, Lilly and Katie. I have recently discovered that his dad wasn't his biological father and that I may have family here. Sadly him and his siblings have now passed away and I know its a long shot but wondered if an older residents remember the family and where they lived?
Thank you :o

I have discovered that many of my ancestors were born in Thorne and my triple great grandparents, Samuel and Ann Meggitt are buried in the horizontal graves right by the main entrance to St Nicholas Church. Samuel was a Master Shoemaker in the Market Place. One of his children was Abraham Stead Meggitt who was my great great grandfather but he died at the age of 28. His name is on the grave but he died in Hessle and St Nicholas records do not show his burial there. I was born in Doncaster but as my parents were from London I had no idea of the strong connection with the area which I now know extends to both sides of the Humber estuary.
If anyone has connections with this branch of the Meggitts I would love to know! I pass by Thorne regularly as the next generation live in Cottingham Nr Hull.

If Mr Alan Darfield is contactable, I have information regarding an aircraft loss which he was researching way back in summer 1999. If he contacts me I will be pleased to pass on the information.

I came to this site to look for pictures and /or the location of Pashley Bridge. I have ancestors named Pashley who lived in the area. The 1851 and 61 census says they were making boots and shoes. They had an apprentice living with them. The address given in the census is Pashley Bridge.
My interest was in the mother of the head of the family.
I have enjoyed your site and wondered if the photo of the shoemakers house was where my ancestors lived.

I have enjoyed reading the contents of your site.

I left my home in Scarborough on 3 August 1958 to commence my career as Police Cadet at Thorne Police Station. I was allocated lodgings with Mr and Mrs WALTER Edge at 10 Wilkinson Avenue, Moorends. I remember Mrs Creaser well. She lived about four doors away. That was the mother of Valerie Creaser. Other people in the street were Mr and Mrs Harry Dunn and Patsy, Mr and Mrs (forgotten )and their daughters Marjorie and Linda. Mr and Mrs Bell.

I have written my memories of being a Cadet at Thorne if you are interested.

Admin reply: Thanks Richard, a page has been made with the information you provided.

Great to see this site. I was a pupil at West Road Infants and then at Thorne Grammar. I subsequently went to University in London and have enjoyed a career as a university teacher. Now retired. My mother was a also a teacher at West Road. I have some pics of staff at west road from 1950's that I can upload to this site if anyone is interested.
I have just sent a load of very old pictures of Thorne and family pictures of the Rawson family ( old Mr Rawson was the chemist in King Street) to Richard Walker, Funeral Director. Someone out there may want to look through them!
