Comments: Hi, we have recently purchased Wraithby House on King Edward Road and wondered how it got the name. The plaque is built into the brickwork so presumably it was there from being built. The plot of land was purchased by Henry Foster from John William Isle in 1925, the presumptive is that Henry Foster had the house built. That's all we know but would love to know the origins of the house name. Can anyone shed any more light on this. Thank you.

Comments: Very interesting. The first photo on photo gallery page one is labelled Council Offices. If I am correct, and it is opposite the old Fielside Junior School, it was referred to as The Temperance Institute when I came to Thorne around 1960. I was searching for info and dates for the demolition of Thorne Town Hall, also known as the Market Hall, on the junction of Finkle Street and Horsefair Green. Still searching.

Comments: My parents and their families came from Thorne and I wondered if anyone can give me information on them. My mother's name was Taylor and her father was a miner, his name was William and hie wife was Mary. My mother had a sister called Jenny who married Clifford Wilson,a plumber who also had a hardware shop. They had 2 sons who I wondered if they were still living, one was a methodist preacher the other an architect. My father had several brothers, Eric had Thorne taxis, Frank who had a bus company and David who was a photographer. Can anyone help with any information please, would be most appreciated. Comments: For more information on the history of brewing in Thorne, an excellent books is "South Yorkshire Stingo : a directory of South Yorkshire Brewers 1758-1995)written by David Lloyd Parry. On page 101, it details the history of William Whitfield, Brewer who started his brewery in Kings Street circa 1818 and his eventual partnership with Charles Darley in 1830. "The two partners then began buying tied houses as early as 1833,when the Red Bear was acquired." It then lists further pubs which they acquired over the following years. Charles Darley died in 1845 and William Whitfield in 1848. This is when William Marsden Darley took over the complete control of the brewery.

Comments: I have 2 x advertisements for the Red Bear Inn dated January 1844 and August 1850 in my possession, plus the 1st and 2nd issues of Darley's Brewery magazine, 'Darley's Diaries' dated 1978 and 1979.
