The destruction of the Empire
Inside the Empire
The Empire Cinema was gutted in an early morning blaze on February 27th 1952. The fire-damaged Empire Cinema was acquired by Father Neill in 1952 as a parish hall. This was later demolished along with the Miners Welfare to make way for the Surestart Building. The pictures below show the site of the Welfare Club and Cinema. Sure Start is a Government programme which aims to achieve better outcomes for children, parents and communities.
